Every Asian river runs on its own calendar, set by monsoon rains, snowmelt and heat. Use this page to line up your dates before you look at ships.
| River | Main cruising pattern | What changes with the season |
|---|---|---|
| Mekong | Lines sell a season rather than year-round on many ships | High water opens the Tonle Sap route toward Siem Reap; low water means road transfers |
| Yangtze | Sailings through most of the year | Spring and autumn are popular; winter is cooler and foggier, and some ships take a break for maintenance |
| Ganges | The cooler, drier months after the monsoon | Water levels decide how far upstream a voyage can go |
Visas and Paperwork
Plan visas early. Vietnam, Cambodia, China and India each have their own rules for U.S. citizens, and some itineraries cross a border by river. Check each country’s page on travel.state.gov, then apply only through official government portals — Vietnam’s e-visa, for instance, is issued at evisa.gov.vn.
Pack light: Asian riverboats have less storage than ocean ships and some programs include internal flights with baggage limits. Our Asia Shore Excursions site helps with ocean-cruise days in Asian ports.

The Irrawaddy: Current Status
The Irrawaddy between Bagan and Mandalay was one of Asia’s great river journeys. The U.S. State Department advisory for Burma (Myanmar) is currently Level 4, “Do Not Travel,” and our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise are not selling Myanmar river cruises while it stands. Our sister site’s background on the river remains online for reference; if the advice changes we will say so here and in the Mister Cruise cruise-offers newsletter.
The temples of Angkor in Cambodia are the region’s other great archaeological site and a far easier add-on today — see UNESCO’s Angkor listing.
When to Book
- Small ships, short seasons — Mekong and Ganges vessels have few cabins, and the most comfortable months sell first.
- Flights shape the dates — long-haul fares and connections often decide which departure works best.
- Visas take time — allow weeks, not days, for applications and passport checks.
- Insurance at deposit — buying cover when you book protects the money you have paid; see Cruise & Travel Insurance.
Shorter Asian river trips exist too, such as overnight journeys on Thailand’s Chao Phraya between Bangkok and the old capital of Ayutthaya, often added to a Bangkok stay. Ask us if you would like one built into a longer itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the monsoon a problem for Asia river cruises?
It shapes the calendar more than it ruins trips. On the Mekong, high water after the rains lets ships go farther, while the dry season can force coach transfers. The Ganges season runs outside the monsoon. Your advisor will flag any water-level risk for your dates.
What about the Brahmaputra?
Brahmaputra cruises in Assam are a specialist product built around wildlife and tea country. Our sister site Brahmaputra River Cruise covers it; ask us for current sailings.
